- Discussing and Experiencing Danish Culture and Identity
Ved Jeppe Langkjær - kontoret krogerup.dk
Recently, OECD published a new report once again ranking the Danes as the happiest people on Planet Earth. But how come the cold, little and seemingly unspectacular Denmark tops these rankings over and over again? Are we really that special? In this course will try to get behind this idealized image and find out what Denmark is all about. We will learn about and experience Danish history and culture in search of the so called "Danishness". In order to find out what constitutes this "Danishness" - and if we indeed can talk about such a thing - we will initially have to discuss what constitutes concepts such as culture, ethnicity and identity. With a shared framework at hand we will then, in various ways, be able to explore phenomenons characterized as typical Danish and investigate to what extent Denmark really is unique. At the end we will then have created our own image of Denmark. An image that, like the OECD report, perhaps portrays the little country to the North as a unique and happy place - perhaps not.
