Crossing Borders Global Studies Course Modules

The Global Studies course explores key dimensions of globalisation within the following thematic modules:

Historical Roots of Democracy and the Challenges of Globalization in Denmark

This module aims to give students a basic understanding of Danish society and culture, while placing an emphasis on the historical roots of participatory democracy and the welfare system, as well as the challenges Denmark has and will face in a globalising world. Students will learn about the historical foundations of the Danish Folkehøjskole movement and labour movements in the formation of Danish democracy, and the crucial role Danish civil society organisations play.

Global Institutions

In this module, participants will explore and reflect upon the values, principles and special interests driving the policies and practices of major institutions in the globalisation process, such as the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, the World Trade Organisation, multinational corporations, the UN system, and civil society organisations and networks.

Searching for Global Sustainability in the face of Negative Climate Change and Global Warming

This module explores questions of sustainability and the impact of globalisation on our planet and its inhabitants. Topics include global warming and the consequences of climate change for people and ecosystems the world over. We will also study the role of energy production, consumption, transportation, housing and food production, within the context of climate change and the carrying capacity of Mother Earth.

The UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)

This module looks into the background, progress and challenges of achieving the eight declared UN 2015 MDGs, which are: 1) End Poverty and Hunger, 2) Achieve Universal Primary Education, 3) Gender Equality, 4) Child Mortality, 5) Maternal Health, 6) HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other Diseases, 7)Environmental Sustainability and 8) Global Partnership for Development. The students will design campaigns to raise awareness by highlighting positive stories and emphasizing that achieving the 8 goals is indeed possible.

The Nature and Role of Global Media

This module examines the role of current global media giants, and their promotion or prevention of intercultural communication and understanding. It also looks at the role they play in escalating and/or de-escalating local, regional and global conflicts. Finally, the module will present and demonstrate was of taking advantages provided by the online media for developing citizen media.

Denmark Study-tour

The main aim of the two-week study-tour is to gain a direct experience of the most sustainable and innovative aspects of Danish society and culture, outside of Copenhagen. The study-tour will take us to Zealand, Jutland and Funen. As the course focuses on the core, current global-issues of concern, students will during the tour explore sustainable living in-action across various regions of Denmark. Participants will visit and stay at Denmark’s most innovative eco-villages and renewable energy centres, located in the three main regions of the country, and take part and engage in everyday tasks. The itinerary will include visiting: a sustainable village outside Hans Christian Anderson’s hometown of Odense; the Freeland Ecovillage, the Old City of Aarhus, NGO Cenre, Chaos Pilots; the world famous eco-Island of Samsoe; and finally the Hallingelille Ecovillage near Roskilde Fjord.

Global Conflicts and Peacebuilding

This module analyses the types, impacts, and origins of contemporary conflicts arising within and across national borders, in the context of globalisation. Moreover, the changing nature of conflict since September 11th, 2001 is explored. The aim is to empower students by providing the analytical tools necessary to develop creative, sustainable and peaceful methods for responding to and managing international conflicts.

Global Citizenship

As the concluding module, this unit aims to strengthen the attitudes, awareness and skills necessary for students to become active global citizens. To that end, students will study the role of NGOs, and youth and grassroots organisations in shaping the different processes of globalisation. To complete the module, students will design project proposals or activities which they can then implement upon return to their home countries.
